The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) Payment Systems Report highlighted that between 2019 and 2024, credit card transactions doubled in volume and almost tripled in value. During the same period, however, debit card transactions witnessed a decline, both in volume and value.

Debit card transactions showed an increase of 88.6 per cent, against a rise of 34.5 per cent for credit cards for the March. In value terms, daily transactions through debit cards increased by 73.4 per cent vis-a-vis an increase of 24.8 per cent in credit card transactions. Sector experts attribute this to the ongoing economic slowdown and the cautious attitude towards spending money. Add to this the diminished focus of banks in issuing credit cards.

Debit card payments remained sluggish due to the surge in digital transactions after the pandemic, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as the most popular mode of money transfer, particularly for small value transactions, according to RBI data. In July 2020, the total debit card spends stood at Rs 2.81 trillion, as compared to Rs 3.15 trillion in July 2023, reflecting a growth of 11.96 per cent. UPI spends have seen a whopping growth of 428 per cent, zooming from Rs 2.90 trillion to Rs 15.33 trillion during the same period, the data revealed.
